A whisper always follows: "Find the artifact. Find yourself."
Chapter One: The Midnight Carnival
The carnival emerged from the mist like a half-forgotten dream, its towering tents shrouded in cryptic banners and adorned with symbols that seemed alive in the moonlight. A crescent moon hung low in the sky, its pale glow carving jagged shadows across the cobblestone paths. Lanterns flickered like restless fireflies, their warm light swallowed by the dense fog. The air thrummed with the haunting melody of a calliope, intertwined with bursts of distant, eerie laughter.
Crow lingered at the entrance, a figure of shadow and stillness. His black leather jacket, marked by the crow emblem stitched on the back, seemed to ripple with a life of its own. The mist parted reluctantly as he stepped forward, revealing the chaotic wonders of the carnival.
Masked performers wove through the milling crowd, their movements elegant yet unsettling. Their masks ranged from intricate, jewel-encrusted designs to grotesque birdlike visages, their empty eyes seemingly fixed on everyone and no one. Fire jugglers tossed blazing orbs high into the night, while a tightrope walker balanced perilously above the swirling fog. The air buzzed with whispered promises and elusive smiles, but to Crow, the carnival was no wonderland—it was a labyrinth of veiled truths.
He moved through the crowd, his boots tapping against uneven cobblestones as his sharp gaze darted from corner to corner. The carousel’s chipped horses gleamed faintly, their sides etched with glowing broken-heart motifs that pulsed with an eerie red light. The atmosphere around the ride vibrated with an otherworldly energy, making the air feel heavy. A tattered banner above a fortune-teller’s tent swayed unnaturally, its edges inscribed with runes that glimmered like dying embers. Near a cluster of shadowed figures captivated by a fire juggler’s performance, Crow noticed a faint glint—a glowing rune etched into the wood of an abandoned ticket booth. It was faint but undeniable, calling to him like an echo from his fragmented past.
